The following information has been prepared exclusively for Absolutlee Fun Fishing Charters and Cruises by Captain Mark Nossal for couples wishing to be married aboard a vessel in Michigan.
Legal wedding ceremony may be performed aboard any vessel in United States waters. The wedding may be officiated by the captain of the vessel, providing they are a member of the clergy (Priest, Rabbi, Reverend or Minister) or a Justice of the Peace. This person is known as the officiant.
While Captain Nossal, who is also an ordained minister, this service is non-denominational and embraces a maritime tradition.
Obtaining a License
Just like a ceremony on land, the couple wishing to be married must first obtain a marriage license in advance of the wedding date. This license may be obtained from your county clerk’s office in the county where you live. If the bride lives in one county and the groom in another, they may choose either county. The license is valid throughout the state of Michigan.
Out-of-state couples who wish to have a Michigan wedding need to choose the county where they plan to get married. The license is only valid for that county.
On the day of the wedding, bring your wedding license with you. The place, date and time, and witness information is completed and signed by the officiant. Most municipalities require two witnesses, who sign the license in the presence of the officiant. The completed wedding certificate is then filed with the Registrar of Vital Statistics for the municipality in which the wedding was conducted.
